About Panzer III - PzKpfw III Ausf. J
The Panzerkampfwagen III (PzKpfw III) Medium Tank is a series of German tanks built from 1935 to 1943. The third tank in the series, it was designed as an infantry-support tank, and had thicker armor than the PzKpfw IV heavy tank or PzKpfw V Panther medium tank that succeeded it.
The name “Panzerkampfwagen” (literally "armor fighting vehicle") is not an acronym but a noun phrase used generically like "armored car" or "tank" for any sort of armored fighting vehicle. In German, "Panzer" refers to any sort of armored fighting vehicle from a historical perspective, not just those in service only during World War II.
